Free virtual workshop shares how community members can beat the holiday blues

Canaan, CT – In a year where joy seems to be in short supply, some are prepping for the holidays even earlier as a means of escape or a return to normalcy. Others may find getting into the holiday spirit challenging, whether because of grief or financial losses, loneliness due to being distanced or estranged from family members, or more routine concerns, such as endless holiday checklists. To encourage community members to decompress during this emotionally taxing time, Mountainside treatment center will host a virtual event designed to help participants cope with holiday stress.

The workshop will take place on Monday, December 7th from 6:30 to 8:00 PM and is open to anyone who may be feeling overwhelmed this holiday season, including those in recovery and their families. The online session on holiday stress will be led by two credentialed clinicians, Alyssa Unikewicz and Marissa Bascom, who will share their insights on a number of topics, including:

·       Keeping holiday traditions alive

·       Handling financial stressors during the holidays

·       Managing time commitments and busy schedules

·       Practicing relaxation techniques to reduce stress

·       Maintaining recovery from substance use and mental health disorders

·       Providing support to a sober family member

To further aid vulnerable individuals, Mountainside will also offer a Holiday Helpline for those who have struggled with substance use disorders. During a typical holiday season, emotions can run high, but 2020 has exacerbated mental health woes, particularly for the recovery community. These individuals can contact the 24/7 helpline for additional support and to receive assistance navigating isolation and other triggers to sobriety during the holidays.
