New York, NY – 2020 has been a draining year so far for many, especially those battling substance use and mental health disorders. To share stress reduction and self-care techniques with community members, Mountainside hosted “The Art of Living Well” last Saturday. The virtual event shared practical tips for healthy living designed to be informative for both people in recovery and all who are interested in stress reduction strategies. To further encourage community wellness, the treatment center is matching and sending all donations from the virtual event to Urban Pathways, a New York City-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of homeless individuals.

The “Art of Living Well” event was in part a virtual celebration of Recovery Month, which draws attention to the plight of individuals currently struggling with substance use disorders as well as the hopeful example set by those in recovery. A 2018 report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) found that over 20 million Americans over the age of 12 struggled with alcohol or drug addiction in the year leading up to the survey. Holistic wellness practices can be particularly valuable for those who have been impacted by addiction.

Recognizing that government funding for social services has diminished during the pandemic, Mountainside sought to give back to an organization that has already touched lives in profound ways so they may continue to offer life-changing services to those in need. Through The Art of Living Well event, Mountainside acknowledges the important work done by Urban Pathways, which aims to provide housing and support services to marginalized and at-risk New Yorkers. Urban Pathways’ mission is particularly meaningful in the era of the coronavirus, with the health and economic repercussions of the pandemic having an even greater impact on homeless and housing insecure populations.

Staying connected and practicing self-care during these challenging times is critical. For more virtual wellness and recovery events presented by Mountainside, please visit: https://mountainside.com/community/events/virtual-support-groups
