A powerful synthetic opioid, fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine, which means it has a higher potential for abuse. It is classified as a “Schedule II” drug. Fentanyl is typically prescribed for pain management after surgery. It can be administered by injection, transdermal patch, or lozenges.

High doses of fentanyl can cause breathing to stop completely, resulting in death. Fentanyl, especially the street kind, carries a high risk of overdose. One should only take fentanyl under a doctor’s care. If you or anyone you know needs addiction treatment, call Mountainside at 860-824-1397.
