After the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Explore the benefits of the parallel process of family involvement in substance use disorder treatment.
  2. Discuss barriers to involving family members in substance use disorder treatment.
  3. Identify techniques to use and factors to consider when engaging families in substance use disorder treatment.
  4. Review the importance of the therapist’s self-work when engaging in clinical services for clients and their families.

About the Presenters:

Julia Purcaro, LMFT, CASAC

Program Manager, Outpatient Services – Mountainside Huntington

Julia has extensive experience working with adults, adolescents, and families with co-occurring disorders in substance abuse residential treatment programs. Throughout her career, Julia has managed departments in substance abuse programs, provided clinical supervision to help team members expand their knowledge and skills, and assisted with program development. At Mountainside, Julia uses a systemic approach to help clients work towards their treatment goals in individual, group, and family therapy. She incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Structural Family Therapy to assist clients in making positive changes.

Peter Juliano, LCSW

Clinical Director – Gooding Wellness Group

Peter Juliano is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor. Peter has been helping adolescents, adults, and families struggling with addiction and mental health disorders for more than 10 years. He has worked as a counselor, family therapist, and administrator in inpatient substance use disorder treatment and hospital settings. Peter is currently an adjunct professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work and teaches graduate level courses in individual counseling, group counseling, motivational interviewing, and family therapy.

Partial credits will not be given. You must participate in the entirety of the workshop.
