When you think about the life you want to lead, what do you see? Is it the life you currently have? If not, what is holding you back from going after it? There is no time like the present to start working towards your goals. So why not make this the year you have been waiting for? Here are some tips on how to do so:

Own Your Life

As is often said, you are the creator of your own destiny. If you want something, you need to go after it. Waiting for your luck to turn around is the only surefire way to make sure it doesn’t happen. So, if you want that promotion, put in the work. If you want to rebuild your relationship with your family, reach out to them. Hold yourself accountable and stop getting in your own way.

Envision Your Future

What do you want out of life? Is it to own your home, to travel more, to have a successful career, to spend more time with family, to smile more? Having concrete goals will help you determine which steps you need to take to achieve them. Want to own your home? Start by paying off your credit cards and improving your credit score. Want to be happier? Practice self-care to reduce your stress and anxiety levels. Breaking down big goals into smaller ones makes them more attainable, and you are less likely to throw in the towel.

Purge Anything Toxic

Just as smiles are contagious, so is negativity. From time to time, it is important to take a step back and say goodbye to anything or anyone holding you back from being happy. Perhaps you are surrounded by people who always seem to have a dark cloud hanging over their heads, or you have friends who are constantly putting you down or dragging you into their drama. Maybe your job is adding unnecessary stress into your life. Know that you don’t need any of this toxic energy in your life, and it is okay to cut ties with people who are holding you back. It doesn’t make you selfish or cold, it simply means you are making your well-being a priority.

Give Up Control

There are certain things in life that you can’t control no matter how much you want to. Obsessing over what could or should be can take a toll on your mental health and prevent you from truly living in the moment, which is why learning to surrender control is important. By letting go of what you cannot control you are able to better focus on controlling what you can, such as how you feel and how you react to setbacks.

Welcome Change

As Henry Ford said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” For your life to change, you must be open to trying new things. You need to open your mind to new experiences and be receptive to different perspectives. Many people get stuck in a routine because it’s comfortable. But often, greatness comes from going past the uncomfortable. So, let go of your fears and enroll in that cooking class you’ve always wanted to take, book that trip to Europe you’ve been talking about, train for a marathon, learn a new language ⎼ find what makes you happy and don’t be afraid to go after it.

Rethink Success

For some, money, luxury cars, and a big house are signs of success. For others, it is having a position of power. But another person’s definition of success doesn’t have to be yours. You don’t have to strive for more money, or a higher position at work, or the newest iPhone simply because you think it’s what you are supposed to do. Think about what makes you feel fulfilled. Is it spending time with loved ones? Learning? Taking care of others? Spending time outdoors? Dedicate yourself to whatever makes you happiest.

Life is filled with countless curveballs and challenges, but you can’t let them paralyze you from going after what you want. Stop waiting for the perfect moment and start living the life you have always wanted to have.
