Recovery Coach Training

Mountainside is among the nation’s premier providers of Recovery Coaching services. The Mountainside Learning Institute (MLI) has officially launched with a Recovery Coach Training program taught by our very own best-in-class professionals. Discover how you can start a rewarding career in addiction treatment by learning from the best Recovery Coaches in the industry.

What is a Recovery Coach?

Simply put, a Recovery Coach is a trained addiction professional who offers lived experience in recovery from a Substance Use Disorder, providing aid and support in personal recovery. Recovery Coaches wear many hats: advocate, guide, peer, cheerleader, accountability partner, educator, and more. Since every client is unique, Recovery Coach support will look different for each person. At Mountainside, we believe in a truly personalized approach to recovery support that “meets each client where they are” in the process, while also helping them discover new tools to navigate sober living.

Ultimately, each client learns their very own formula for achieving successful long-term recovery, utilizing skills and supports they develop while working with their certified Recovery Coach. In more formal terms, the Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Providers – New York Certification Board (ASAP-NYCB) and Connecticut Certification Board (CCB) defines a Recovery Coach as “anyone interested in promoting recovery from addiction by assisting recoverees to remove barriers to recovery, generating individualized recovery options, and connecting recoverees with recovery support services designed to build recovery capital.”

How do I Become a Recovery Coach?

Each state has different requirements and processes for becoming a certified recovery coach. In New York, there are two main certifications for coaching: Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC) and Certified Recovery Peer Advocate (CRPA). For both types of certifications there are about 50 hours of ASAP-NYCB approved foundational trainings. After that, each certification has different requirements to complete each process.

In Connecticut, aspiring coaches should pursue the Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification.
