What is the admissions process?
The first step of the admissions process is to complete a quick 15-minute evaluation over the phone. This evaluation helps determine if Mountainside is the best fit for the person in need of treatment as well as what level of care they would require. During this time, we will also complete a verification of benefits with the person’s insurance company. Once we have clinical approval for admission and can verify the benefits, we will schedule an appointment for admission.
How long does it take for a client to be admitted into Mountainside?
We have a rolling admissions process and can admit clients 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for those in need to begin treatment. Depending on the needs of the person seeking treatment, we accept both same-day admissions or can schedule admission for a specific date. We are also able to admit individuals during the day and evening. And if transportation is needed, we can help arrange that as well.
What is the cost of treatment at Mountainside?
Each individual has different treatment needs and so cost varies based on type of treatment program and length of treatment. Whether or not an individual has insurance coverage and the type of coverage included also influences cost. Please call our admissions team to receive a cost estimate for your specific conditions.
Do you provide financial assistance to help with the cost for treatment?
At Mountainside, we do not want cost to stand between an individual and the treatment they need. We work with most private insurance providers and have an entire team dedicated to liaising with insurance providers to advocate for our clients. We accept private pay, offer flexible payment plans, as well as offer assistance in seeking financing options. What programs and services does Mountainside offer?
We provide a full continuum of care at Mountainside, which includes medically monitored Detox, inpatient Residential treatment, Extended Care — our long-term inpatient program , Outpatient Services, Recovery Coaching, Adolescent Services, and Medication-Assisted Treatment. Individuals can either sequentially access the full continuum or admit directly into any of our programs based on clinical recommendation. In addition, we also have a Family Wellness program to help the loved ones of addicted individuals to heal.
What type of therapies do you use?
Mountainside specializes in treating alcoholism and drug addiction. We are also equipped to treat a series of co-occurring disorders, such as depression and anxiety, that clients may have in addition to their addiction. Each client works with a professional, licensed clinician to put together a customized wellness plan to help the client achieve wellness in all facets of life.
During clinical treatment, clinicians utilize a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness and grounding techniques to help clients recognize and learn to manage emotions and behaviors. To complement counseling, we offer numerous alternative wellness therapies including acupuncture, yoga, art and music therapy as well as adventure therapy to foster complete healing — mind, body and spirit.
What is the typical length of stay?
If detox is determined to be medically necessary, detox averages 5 days, but can range from 3 to 10 days, before the start of Residential treatment. Our Residential program is a 30-day program. Our Extended Care program – a form of long-term residential treatment that combines outpatient treatment, sober living, and a work therapy program – averages 90 days and can extend longer to meet individual client’s needs.
How do you support clients after they leave?
Recovery is a lifelong journey. From day one, we begin to educate clients to embrace this message. Soon after admission, each client begins to work with a Continuing Care Case Manager to develop specific “next step” plans after completing treatment. These aftercare plans ensure clients continue to make progress and stay sober after leaving Mountainside. We also have an Alumni program that follows up with clients, provides them with guidance and support post-discharge, and plans a series of exciting alumni events and gatherings.
Can’t I just detox on my own?
Detoxing without medication and monitoring can be dangerous, especially if you have been using alcohol or benzodiazepines. Some of these dangers can include seizures and even death. Even if you are not at risk, you may feel extremely sick or very uncomfortable, which significantly increase your risk of relapse and cause you to start drinking or using drugs again. It is often much safer and more comfortable to detox in a medical setting. Please do speak with an addiction treatment professional to determine what will be the best detox plan for you.
How long will detox take?
On average, detox takes 5 days, but can range from 3 to 10 days. However, your exact length of stay depends on a variety of factors: the substance(s) you are using, the amount of substance(s) you are using, and for how long you have been using the substance(s).

Can I get a private room during my stay in detox?
Yes, we offer a private detox suite for individuals that need an extra level of privacy. The suite is an especially good option for individuals that must maintain contact with loved ones or business associates during their detox stay. Amenities include access to private phone and laptop, as well as in-suite medical and clinical care.
What items should I bring?
The detoxification process is often physically and mentally draining. To make it as comfortable as possible for you, we provide you with all necessities as well as an array of amenities to make your stay both healing and enjoyable. Can my family visit me while I’m in detox?
In order to enable you to fully focus on your recovery, we do not allow visitors during your stay in our detox program.
How long is the residential program?
Our inpatient program is 30 days on average.
Where will I be living during my stay in the residential program?
You will be staying in one of our spacious, modern bedrooms. Detailed pictures of residential rooms and bathrooms can be found in the residential photo gallery.
Will I have a roommate?
Yes, you will have a roommate throughout your stay as Mountainside Treatment Center values the importance of community in recovery. All our rooms are spacious and you will be provided with your own living space. Many clients enjoy having a roommate and find that they form new bonds and positive relationships with others going through the same experience as themselves.
What is a typical day like?
Our clinicians work closely with each client to determine the best combination of counseling sessions, educational groups, and wellness activities to meet the client's goals and needs. No two client's treatment plans are the same but you can find a sample typical day on our Residential program page.
Can I contact my family while I am in treatment?
Yes, you will have access to a phone during non-program hours to make outgoing phone calls. The phones are on from 7 AM to 10:30 PM. While your loved ones cannot call you, they can call the client message center 24 hours a day and leave you messages.
Am I allowed visitors?
Yes, once you have completed your first seven days of residential treatment you will be eligible for visitors. However, visitors must be approved by your clinician prior to scheduling a visit. First-time visitors must attend the Family Wellness Orientation prior to visiting.
Am I allowed to receive packages?
No, Mountainside has a no package policy. If you feel that there is something you need which must be brought in from the outside, please speak with your clinician. He or she will help to determine need for the item, and if appropriate, grant approval for delivery of the package.
What is the difference between Extended Care and sober living?
Sober living refers to living in an alcohol and drug-free home with other individuals in recovery. Our Extended Care program offers sober living and more.
Four components make up our Extended Care program - Community Living (i.e. sober living), Outpatient Services, a Work Therapy Program, and sober Trips and Adventures. Through this unique combination of programming, you will develop life skills, receive clinical treatment, earn money while practicing job skills, and participate in a variety of fun activities. What does a typical day in Extended Care look like?
Day-to-day programming changes based on your needs. However, a typical day in our Extended Care program often consists of working at Mountainside-affiliated facilities, planning goals and assessing progress with your case manager, attending in-house 12 Step meetings, participating in outpatient treatment, and attending an educational workshop. During the evenings, clients enjoy leisure activities and attend outside 12 Step meetings.

How long is the program?
Length of stay depends on your individual needs, but the average length of stay is 90 days.
How many hours of Outpatient Services are included each week?
What Outpatient Services you receive, and how much you receive, varies according to your needs. Initially most Extended Care clients start in our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which is 9 hours a week with a wellness plan review on weeks 1,3 and 6. After 6 weeks, clients typically transition to a relapse prevention Outpatient Program with one hour of group counseling and one hour of individual counseling each week. Psychiatric Services and family counseling sessions are available based on need, and require a referral.
What outpatient services do you offer?
Mountainside offers three options for Outpatient Services: Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Outpatient Program (OP) and Individual Therapy (IT). As part of treatment, you will have access to individual and group counseling, family therapy, psychiatric services, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) including Suboxone and Vivitrol, toxicology screenings, and wellness therapies. Services are provided on an as needed basis as determined by your clinician.
Do you accept insurance?
We work with most private insurance companies on an out-of-network basis. However, in our Wilton, CT Outpatient Services location, we are in network with Aetna. We strive to help all our clients get the help they need and can discuss private payment options if needed.
What is the structure of your Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?
IOP averages 4-6 weeks for 9+ hours a week, but at Mountainside we pride ourselves in being able to cater our services and programming to our clients’ needs.
Our clinical structure is a mix of psychotherapy and psycho education utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Mindfulness and Grounding Techniques.
Who runs your IOP program?
Our IOP is facilitated by our professional licensed clinicians. We also have guest speakers who come in to share their knowledge and experiences.
Can I receive psychiatric treatment without having to do therapy?
No, because we firmly believe that sustainable recovery is best achieved by a combination of both psychiatric services and therapy, we do not offer psychiatric treatments on their own.
Where are outpatient services offered?
How long is an intake appointment?
Clients can expect to be at their intake appointment for about two and a half hours.
Are there weekend appointments?
At the moment, we are not open on weekends.
Can I take time off to go on vacation?
Yes, it is possible to take time off. We tailor our program to fit within your lifestyle and will work with you to schedule a time for you to make up any missing individual or group sessions.
Is Recovery Coaching therapy?
It is comprehensive, strength-based support and coaching provided by certified professionals committed to helping clients reach their recovery goals.
How is this different from having a sponsor?
Our certified recovery coaches work full-time to help clients remain sober and overcome any life challenges that arise during early recovery. Coaches and clients work on personalized wellness plans and risk assessments ─ a sponsor does not do this. Coaches are also in constant communication with a client’s family to inform them of their loved one’s progress as well as ensure that the client is receiving the necessary support to succeed. If a client needs additional services from addiction professionals, their coach will connect them to reputable service providers to ensure that they are receiving the comprehensive assistance they need. While a coach does not take you through the 12 steps, they do encourage each client to participate in a fellowship, and often reference the 12 steps.
One of the biggest difference between Mountainside’s Recovery Coaching program and having a sponsor is that our program is supported by an experienced clinical team that is available to assist as needed.
Are the Recovery Coaches in recovery?
All of our recovery coaches—whether they are in recovery or not—are knowledgeable about the nature of addiction and how to help clients achieve their sobriety goals. Many are indeed in recovery themselves and share guidance based on their own experiences.
What does the program include?
Our Recovery Coaching program includes 24/7 access to your coach, weekly face-to-face meetings (available in our New York City, Chappaqua, and Wilton locations or at a place convenient to you), FaceTime calls, family calls, connected care network calls, wellness plans, monthly goal development, accountability, and sober companionship. How often are my family and I able to connect with the recovery coach?
As much as you need to. There is a set schedule, and most sessions are completed during regular business hours, but there is 24/7 phone support in the event of an emergency.
How long is the program?
Mountainside’s Recovery Coaching program is designed to last a year but can be tailored to meet a client’s needs.
What if I relapse?
Our clinical team will conduct a relapse assessment and identify the appropriate level of care you need, and provide you with referrals as necessary. Depending on the individual and the severity of their relapse, clients may be recommended to increase daily communication, seek a psychiatrist, enter sober living, participate in outpatient therapy, undergo detox, or enter a residential addiction treatment program. Because recovery coaches are in constant communication with clients, their family, and their support network, they are able to catch relapses early on.
Am I able to end the program at any time?
If you feel the program is not meeting your needs, you will be able to stop at any time.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
What is the length of the program?
We provide holistic, individualized addiction treatment tailored to each individual's needs. Therefore, there is no set duration of time for our MAT program. How long you will be on Suboxone or Vivitrol depends on your recovery goals and how you progress in your treatment program.
Does Mountainside accept state insurance?
We do not accept any state insurance. However, we offer a sliding scale rate for individuals whose insurance does not cover treatment at Mountainside.
Can I get Suboxone or Vivitrol today?
Before beginning any treatment program, you will go through our intake process which includes tests and assessments to help our treatment team better understand your current state of health. For our Medication-Assisted Treatment program, a psychiatric evaluation will also need to be conducted before you start either Suboxone or Vivitrol medication.
What is different between the Saturday Family Wellness Workshop and the Sunday Family Wellness Orientation?
The Family Wellness Orientation is a brief overview of what addiction is, the beginning stages of recovery for your loved one, initial communication strategies, and an introduction to how you can take care of yourself as your loved one is entering the recovery process.
The Family Empowerment Workshop is a full day of education, discussion and activities to help families understand their parallel process of recovery. Key topics covered are self-care for families, family dynamics, drawing and protecting boundaries, and constructive communication skills. The workshop provides an in-depth look at how families can support themselves while also positively supporting their loved ones in recovery.
What topics are covered in the Sunday Family Wellness Orientation?
The orientation topics include: how to communicate with your loved one during your first visit, hopes and fears during early recovery, how to practice self-care and set boundaries, and information on Mountainside’s continuing care services and other valuable offerings.
What type of family involvement is available during treatment?
When can I visit my loved one?
While your loved one is in detox, visitation is not permitted. This is to allow your loved one the time and space to completely focus on getting physically well.
If you loved one is in our Residential treatment program, they will be eligible to receive visitors after successfully completing seven days in the program.
Please note that all visitors must be approved by a clinician prior to scheduling a visit. If you are a first-time visitor, you will be required to attend the Family Wellness Orientation which is held Sundays from 9:30 AM to 12:15 PM. Afterwards, you will be visiting with your loved one until visitation hours end at 5:00pm. If you have already completed orientation, you can visit your loved one Sundays from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM.
Can I call my loved one while they are in treatment?
You cannot call your loved one, however, you can call the client message center 24 hours a day and leave them messages. Your loved one will have access to a phone during non-program hours to make outgoing phone calls.
Can I drop off clothing items my loved one forgot or bring them during visitation?
No, Mountainside has a strict “no package” policy. If there is something your loved one needs, please coordinate how to meet those needs with your loved one’s clinician.
