Huntington, NY – In recognition of Women’s History Month, Mountainside Treatment Center is proud to announce a scholarship program specifically designed to support patients who enter Huntington Hospital for substance abuse-related symptoms. This initiative aims to remove cost barriers and provide essential treatment opportunities to women referred by Huntington Hospital’s emergency room.

According to the NYS Department of Health, in 2021, Nassau and Suffolk counties in Long Island were among the top 10 counties in New York State with 20 or more overdose deaths involving heroin.

“With overdose rates rising, increasing access to treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) is critical,” says Julia Purcaro LMFT, Outpatient Program Manager at Mountainside Huntington. “By partnering with Huntington Hospital and offering scholarships to women in need, we’re addressing the financial barrier that may deter them from seeking help. We hope this initiative empowers more women to begin their recovery journey.”

Mountainside will fully scholarship two women for participation in their intensive outpatient program (IOP). Mountainside Huntington’s outpatient program offers a structured and supportive environment where clients and families can address trauma and maladaptive behaviors, learn coping skills, develop healthy relapse prevention strategies, and build a strong foundation for lasting recovery.

Research suggests that although women are less likely to use alcohol, cocaine, tobacco, and cannabis compared to men, they tend to develop substance dependence quickly and experience more serious physical consequences.

Mountainside’s scholarship effort aligns with its ongoing commitment to providing high-quality, evidence-based treatment for all individuals struggling with addiction. By removing financial barriers and offering unique wellness plans, Mountainside aims to create a more accessible and inclusive recovery environment.
