Our Treatment Philosophy for Veterans
For veteran and military members, unresolved trauma can lead to challenges in daily life and increase the risk of substance use disorder (SUD) and other mental health conditions. Almost one out of every three veterans seeking treatment for SUD also has Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
At Mountainside, we offer a person-centered approach for veterans that combines clinical therapies with wellness support such as acupuncture, ropes course, and expressive art. We help veterans recognize and address their trauma, break free from unhealthy habits, and confidently transition back into everyday life.
Mountainside has locations in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey and offers different levels of virtual and in-person addiction treatment for veterans or military members.
Effective Therapies for Veterans Struggling with Addiction
Your recovery journey is a collaborative effort with your healthcare team to identify the treatment that best aligns with your needs. Mountainside offers the following therapies and more:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Veterans with SUD develop more balanced and constructive thoughts about themselves, others, and the future. CBT can aid in managing the urge to drink or use drugs and use a problem-solving approach to achieve personal goals.
- Motivational Interviewing (MI) – Involves conversations between the Veteran and their provider to detect and strengthen personal motivations for change.
- Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) – EMDR is a therapy route that can help individuals who served process and heal from the emotional and psychological effects of distressing experiences. This treatment is not just for veterans with PTSD but also addresses deeply held negative cognitions and repeat emotions.
- Solution-Focused Therapy: This goal-oriented approach focuses on using strengths and resources to implement solutions for veteran clients, rather than delving into underlying past issues.
- Grief Support: Foster understanding of the relationship between grief and the use of substances to cope, numb and deal with the pain of the loss.
- Seeking Safety: Trauma-focused, present-focused approach designed to help individuals cope with trauma and addiction simultaneously. It focuses on building safety in relationships, thinking, and emotions to help people heal and regain control over their lives.
