If you want to reclaim your life from addiction but are too overwhelmed with all the treatment options available, you are not alone. Finding the right treatment program can be a challenging process, and because everyone’s treatment needs are different, knowing where to start isn’t always intuitive.

To help you get a better idea of which type of treatment may be best for you, we have created a brief overview of the most common addiction treatments available.

DETOX

Detox is the medically-supervised process of removing toxic substances from your body. It is typically the first step in the recovery process, especially if you are currently abusing alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or opioids, as detoxing from these substances alone can be not only dangerous but deadly.

On average, detox lasts between 3 and 10 days. As your body rids itself of toxic substances, it begins to heal, allowing you to regain your physical strength and mental clarity. Because detox primarily treats physical dependence and not the psychological aspects of addiction, further treatment is highly recommended once the detoxification process is completed.

INPATIENT

Inpatient, also known as residential treatment, is the most intensive type of addiction treatment available. Comprehensive programs typically combine addiction education, 12 Step principles, clinical therapy, family counseling, and wellness services to help you transform your life. One of the greatest benefits of inpatient treatment is that it removes you from the stress, triggers, and temptations that may be present in your daily life and allows you to fully focus on getting better.

Most residential programs are 30 days long. During this time, you address the cause of your addiction and gain the tools to recognize triggers and prevent relapse. You also establish a support network to help keep you grounded once you are back home. While residential treatment provides you with a strong foundation for sobriety, you may find that you need additional treatment or could benefit from attending a support group once you have completed residential treatment.

OUTPATIENT

Outpatient treatment provides you with the addiction education and clinical therapy you need while allowing you to continue living at home. Because you will remain in your current surroundings, outpatient treatment is only recommended for those who live in a safe, drug-free environment and have a strong support system. By offering services on a flexible day and evening schedule, outpatient treatment allows you to maintain your personal and family obligations while working on overcoming your addiction.

The length of treatment varies depending on your needs and progress. Most outpatient programs are made up of a combination of individual and group therapy.

SOBER LIVING

While residential treatment provides a strong foundation for recovery, the first 90 days following completion are crucial. Because of this, you may benefit from sober living. Also known as extended care, sober living is designed as a transition between inpatient treatment and your everyday life. During this time, you live in a sober home where house rules are implemented to ensure your safety and safeguard your sobriety. More structured sober living programs, such as Mountainside’s, not only offer a safe and sober living environment but also provide supervision and guidance by treatment professionals. These programs often include clinical therapy, facilitate 12 Step groups, enable you to work or study part-time, and help you relearn the skills you need to succeed outside of a treatment environment.

Length varies depending on your needs, but most extended-care programs are a minimum of 90 days.

RECOVERY COACHING

If you have just completed treatment and need some extra support, or if you have recently experienced a relapse, recovery coaching may be right for you. Serving as your partner, mentor, and advocate, a certified recovery coach guides you through this transitional period, ensuring that you have the tools and support you need to overcome any challenges that come your way. Most recovery coaching programs are highly personalized, and the length of treatment varies accordingly.
