We can’t deny that alcohol plays a big role in many Super Bowl festivities, but that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the excitement because you’re sober. This year, join in on the fun without jeopardizing your recovery by throwing your own sober Super Bowl party.
Here are some tips to make sure your celebration makes it into the hall of fame.
Establish Some Rules
No matter where you are in your recovery, an alcohol-free environment is always the best way to protect your sobriety. Is your home not your own turf? You get to establish a no-alcohol rule and be sure to let everyone in attendance know ahead of time. After all, the focus of your party should be enjoying the big game, not seeing who can put down more beers. And remember, this is a boundary you created. It is okay to expect it to be followed, and to remind others of your standard.
Create a Guest List
The benefit of throwing your own party is that you get to be selective about who gets to attend. This means that by only inviting positive people who support your recovery, you’ll be able to create a fun and stress-free environment. Anyone who may trigger you in any way should not be invited. And while keeping the guest list to only people that you know is always safest, if you do allow your guests to bring others, be sure that they know that this will be a sober event.
Show Your Team Spirit
One of the reasons why Super Bowl parties are so fun is because of the lively atmosphere. And you don’t need alcohol to create it. You can get your guests into the spirit of the game from the moment they step into your party by transforming your space into football central with simple decorations like streamers, inflatable footballs, and foam fingers. Want to make it really fun? Encourage your guests to dress up in their favorite team jerseys or pick a costume theme for the evening. You can even get face paint for those last-minute guests who show up unprepared.
Make it All About the Food
No one is going to care or even notice that there’s no beer at your party if you have a full spread of delicious Super Bowl party foods such as nachos, wings, hotdogs, chili, or sliders. You can even get really creative with your food and make things like a stadium cake, touchdown cookies, or meatball-stuffed football bread. And while food is important, be sure to have plenty of beverage options such as water, soda, and juices for your guests.
Play Some Games
Watching the game is fun in itself, but another great way to keep everyone engaged and entertained is by playing some interactive games such as game day bingo or guess the game. Want to really challenge your guests? Play the Don’t Say “Football” game. At the beginning of the game, everyone receives a small paper football to pin to their shirt. Once everyone has one, no one is allowed to say the word “football,” and if they do, they must give up their paper football to whoever catches them using the word. The person with the most paper footballs at the end of the game wins.
With these tips in hand, you can say goodbye to the fear that you’re missing out, and throw a sober celebration that’s not only fun but also a great reminder of just how exciting life in recovery can be.
